On Thursday 5th November we had a special day at Yenton Primary School. To celebrate Black History Month our work that day was themed around people who inspire us; from Sport and Politics to Authors and Music. All day the children were also involved in a fantastic dance and drums workshop, which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Honouring the past, inspiring the future.

Year 1

In Year 1 our theme was entertainers. We researched Sid Sloane from CBeebies who helped launch the channel back in 2002. We looked at how he inspires children to explore the world around them and learn new things.

In Maths we read Handa’s Surprise and then completed an investigation using our number facts to 10 to determine how many of each fruit Handa might have in her basket.

Year 2

In Year 2 our theme was authors. We researched Lenny Henry using the ipads in computing and then wrote fact-files about him from where he grew up to how he still inspires people today, through comedy.

Year 3

In Year 3 we created a profile of Barack Obama the US president and how he inspires not only his country but people around the world. We looked at how he has spent a lot of his time changing policies and helping people with health care and work.

In Art, we created President Obama pop art using chalk and we took inspiration from the famous Andy Warhol paintings.

Year 4

In Year 4 English we looked at who Rosa Parks was and what she did that made her an inspiration. We then wrote a diary entry from the viewpoint of Rosa, on the day she refused to move on the bus. We also looked at why she was an inspiration to other people, and how her actions caused change.

In Maths, we solved logical problems, where African Animals represented numbers.

Year 5

In Year 5 our theme was sport so we researched Jessie Owens. We looked at who he was and what he was remembered for. We then wrote about him using relative clauses to add extra information to our work.

In Maths we compared and ordered the times and distances famous Black British Athletes had run when competing in a race. We read information from a table and then converted times and measures to solve the problems.

In the afternoon we had lots of fun drawing Usain Bolt, using shading and attention to detail.

Year 6

In Year 6 our theme was politicians. We did a maths investigation based around the life of Martin Luther King, which involved all four operations.

In English we researched information on; Martin Luther King, Barack Obama or Nelson Mandela. After we chose how we would like to present this information in a fact file with illustrations.
